If you only have half a day to escape Marrakech, Ourika Valley is one of the easiest choices.
The road follows the Ourika River into the foothills of the High Atlas, passing mountain villages, green terraces, roadside cafés and local cooperatives. The lower valley is close enough to Marrakech for a relaxed outing, while continuing toward Setti Fatma turns it into a fuller mountain experience.

Zagora is a gateway to the desert landscapes of southern Morocco and the spectacular Draa Valley, famous for its enormous palm groves and kasbahs.
Technically, you can attempt Zagora as a single-day trip from Marrakech. I would not recommend it.
A return journey means roughly 12–14 hours on the road, leaving very little time to enjoy the destination.

Local tip
Turn this into a 2-day/1-night trip whenever possible. You will spend less time rushing and more time actually experiencing the landscape.
And remember: Zagora is a gateway to Morocco’s desert, but the larger classic Sahara dune landscapes are farther south. If huge sand dunes are your priority, plan a longer desert trip rather than treating Zagora as a one-day substitute.

The first waterfall can generally be reached in around 30–45 minutes, although the trail is rocky and uneven. Reaching the higher waterfalls becomes progressively more demanding.

Local tip
Wear proper walking shoes. The rocks around the waterfalls can be slippery, and sandals or flip-flops are a poor choice for the trail.
Why it ranks #9: It’s an excellent excursion, but I rank it below the broader Ourika experience because the waterfall hike is more physically demanding and the two experiences overlap geographically.

Essaouira and Ouzoud are longer but still comfortably doable as full-day excursions if you leave early.
Aït Ben Haddou is possible in one day, but expect a long day with several hours of driving.
Zagora is the one I would strongly recommend doing overnight. The distance is simply too great to make a relaxed day trip.
Should You Book a Tour or Drive Yourself?
It depends on the destination and how comfortable you are with Moroccan roads.
For Ourika, Agafay and Essaouira, independent travel by rental car is relatively straightforward.
For Imlil, a private driver or organised tour can make the logistics easier, particularly if you want a local mountain guide for the hike.
For Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and Zagora, a driver or organised tour can be more convenient because the routes involve long mountain and desert journeys.
For hiking destinations, a local guide is also worth considering if you’re going beyond the easiest trails.
